The sixth step of the research process highlights reading techniques such as skimming and scanning, to easily locate worthwhile, valuable or meaningful information.

Step Six: Read Selectively

  • Skim texts to see which ones are worthwhile
  • Scan the table of contents, the introduction, the conclusion and the abstract
  • Look for text features such as chapter headings, section headings, boldface words,
    italicized words, captions, sidebars, glossary and/or index
  • Highlight, italicize or bold important information or quotes
  • Review the bibliography for additional resources
  • Summarize key points
