How to Write a Paragraph | Écrire un paragraphe

Topic Sentence:

The topic sentence is the first and most important sentence in the paragraph as it introduces the main idea. It also indicates to the reader what the paragraph will be about.

Example:

A good friend is someone you can trust, someone who cares about you and someone you can be yourself with. First, a good friend is trustworthy because they will not leave you out of things, they can keep a secret and you can always count on them when you need them. Also, a good friend is caring because they listen, they do not get mad for too long and they sometimes know what you are thinking and feeling. Finally, you can always be yourself with a great friend because you share the same interests and you learn from each other and they are always fun to be with. A good friend is an important part of your life because you can always rely on them to stick around when things get rough, they make you smile and they accept you for who you are.

Un bon ami c’est quelqu’un à qui tu peux te confier, qui se soucie de toi et qui t’encourage à être toi-même. Premièrement, un bon ami est digne de confiance parce qu’il t’inclut dans plein de choses et ne te laissera jamais de côté. Supporting Details/Sentences:

The supporting detail sentences come after the topic sentence and make up the body of the paragraph. These sentences are called “supporting” because they give details to explain, develop and support the main idea of the paragraph. The supporting details should include facts, details, and examples. Transition words such as first/firstly (premièrement), also (en plus, aussi), finally (enfin, finalement) should be used to connect the ideas in the paragraph. Conjunctions are also used as connecting words. A minimum of three supporting detail sentences should be included in your paragraph.

Closing Sentence:

The closing sentence comes at the end of the paragraph and summarizes the information that has been presented or restates the main idea of the paragraph using different words. The closing sentence is similar to, but not the same as, the topic sentence.
