A determiner | un déterminant is a word that precedes, introduces and modifies a noun. There are two types of determiners :
- articles | les articles (e.g., le, une, des, du) and
- adjectives | les adjectifs non qualificatifs (e.g., mon, cette, chaque, deux).

Definite articles | Les articles définis
The definite article, which expresses the English word ‘the’, indicates a specific person or thing. A definite article refers to something definite.
For example | Par exemple:
Masculine definite articles | Les articles définis masculins : le and l’(before a vowel)
Le garçon mange le biscuit. | The boy is eating the cookie.
L’étudiant télécharge sa chanson sur l‘iPod. | The student downloads his song on the iPod.
Feminine definite articles | Les articles définis féminins : la and l’(before a vowel)
La fille nage dans la piscine. | The girl is swimming in the pool.
On étudie l’ébullition de l’eau. | We are studying the boiling point of (the) water.
Plural definite article | L’article défini au pluriel : les
Les enfants jouent avec les cerceaux. | The children are playing with the hoops.
Indefinite articles | Les articles indéfinis
Indefinite articles, which express the English words ‘a’, ‘an’ or ‘some’, refer to persons and objects not specifically identified. An indefinite article indicates something unspecific.
Masculine indefinite article | L’article indéfini masculin : un
Un garçon mange un biscuit. | A boy is eating a cookie.
Un étudiant télécharge sa chanson sur un iPod. | A student downloads his song on an iPod.
Feminine indefinite article | L’article indéfini féminin : une
Une fille nage dans une piscine. | A girl is swimming in a pool.
Une eau douce est une eau qui contient peu de sels dissous. | Soft water is (a) water that is free of dissolved salts.
Plural indefinite article | L’article indéfini au pluriel : des
Des enfants jouent avec des cerceaux. | Some children are playing with (some) hoops.
Partitive articles | Les articles partitifs
Partitive articles express parts of a whole (some or any) or indefinite quantities (something that is not being counted). A partitive article is used when referring to only a part of a given substance.
Masculine partitive articles | Les articles indéfinis masculins : du and de l’ (before a vowel)
Le garçon boit du lait. | The boy drinks (some) milk.
Elle a de l’argent dans son portefeuille. | She has (some) money in her wallet.
Feminine partitive articles | Les articles indéfinis féminins : de la and de l’ (before a vowel)
Je prends de la réglisse rouge. | I take (some) red licorice.
Les dauphins démontrent de l’intelligence. | Dolphins demonstrate (some) intelligence.
Plural partitive article | L’article indéfini au pluriel : des
Je dois acheter des épinards et des céréales. | I have to buy (some) spinach and (some) cereal.
In negative sentences, the partitive articles du, de la, des, de l’ change to de or d’ (before a vowel):
Masculine:
Le garçon ne boit pas de lait. | The boy does not drinks (any) milk.
Elle n’a pas d’argent dans son portefeuille. | She does not have (any) money in her wallet.
Feminine:
Je ne prends pas de réglisse rouge. | I do not take (any) red licorice.
Les études ne démontrent pas d’effets. | The studies do not demonstrate (any) effects.
Plural:
Je ne dois pas acheter d’épinards ou de céréales. |I do not have to buy (any) spinach or (any) cereal.
After expressions of quantity, the partitive articles are also usually reduced to de or d’ (before a vowel):
Vous avez trop de temps libre. | You have too much free time.
Avec un peu d’imagination nous pouvons réussir! | With a little imagination we can succeed!
Il boit beaucoup d’eau avec ses repas. | He drinks a lot of water with his meals.
Je regarde moins de télé les weekends. | I watch less television on the weekends.
Indefinite Adjectives | Les adjectifs indéfinis
Indefinite adjectives are used to modify nouns in an unspecific manner.
Elle a fini sans aucun effort. | She finished without any effort.
Nous avons accepté le défi sans aucune hésitation. | We accepted the challenge without any hesitation.
L’artiste a un certain style. | The artist has a certain style.
Vous chantez d’une certaine façon. | You sing a certain way.
Certains joueurs sont talentueux. | Certain players are talented.
Certaines images sont difficiles à identifier. | Certain pictures are difficult to identify.
Tu m’as donné maints exemples. | You gave me many examples.
Il t’en a parlé maintes fois. | He has spoken to you about it many times.
Chaque morceau était délicieux. | Each piece was delicious.
Interrogative and Exclamatory Adjectives | Les adjectifs interrogatifs et exclamatifs
An interrogative adjective asks a question about a noun. An exclamatory adjective expresses a strong emotion about the noun it modifies.
The interrogative adjective interrogates:
Quel livre? | Which book?
Quelle aventure? | Which adventure?
Quels bleuets? |Which blueberries?
Quelles photos? | Which pictures?
The exclamatory adjective exclaims:
Quel livre! | What a book!
Quelle aventure! | What an adventure!
Quels bleuets! | What delicious blueberries!
Quelles photos! | What great pictures!
